If you have just joined a martial arts Inner West school or are looking at ways to reinvigorate your training, below are 7 ways to improve and enhance the quality of your martial arts experience.
Setting a weekly, monthly, and yearly goals can help you overcome distractions. Gradings are a great part of martial arts as there are predefined, goals already set out for you. Or simply having a goal to train once per week is a great start. The key here is to never beat your self up or be hard on yourself for missing class, or not reaching a defined goal. Remember it is the journey that is important not the end product.
Train for the long term.
Training Martial Arts Inner West, there will be ups and downs along the way. The key to staying on the path is making it long term. Use this long term strategy to make it part of your lifestyle and not just a faze that you are going through. The only way to get good at something is to commit to the long term. I have been studying Japanese for 28 years, I did tango for 10 years, have been meditating for 10 years…. Get the idea. One thing though, you have to enjoy what you are doing.
Stretch the body
Stretching tones the body and increases endurance. Especially in martial arts where there is dynamic movement. Increasing your flexibility will improve your training longevity, and reduce the chance of injury. You don’t need to take on regular yoga or pilates classes, though they would be good to learn the basics.
Get good at one martial art first.
Back when I started my martial arts training it was hard to find a good school. These days with so many to choose from it can be hard to stick with just one. The style that you choose is based on what it is you are looking for. I always tell people that the style you choose has more to do with the teacher than the style. What ever you choose it is important to stay with the one system whilst you learn sound basics.
Celebrate small wins
As you perfect certain moves be it a white belt form or a black belt self defense move it is important to give your self a pat on the back. Some of the moves take time to learn, it is important not to rush through the techniques. Get good a little at a time and celebrate as you go.
Supplementing your martial arts with short power walks, runs, swims or cycling will increase your fitness and stamina making your class more enjoyable. The key here is to train for no longer than 20 minutes and to challenge your self.
Make friends with people on the same journey
Sharing and enjoying then company of like-minded training partners has been one of my greatest joys. Seeing the many friendships and relationships develop over the years has been instrumental in building a community for any one to get involved. No matter what your level or experience hanging about and chatting for a few minutes after training will improve your training as it strengthens your emotional attachment, another great reason to go.
